Ventures into quilt (block) design

July 21, 2019July 21, 2019Leave a comment

What made me fall in love with modern quilting is the potential to play with graphic design and fabrics at the same time. In this post I will explain the design process that went into my first original block design, the "Organic Diamond" block, which was recently published as "block study" in Modern Monthly by … Continue reading Ventures into quilt (block) design

Discovering new bag construction techniques

...with sewing organizers from Aneela Hoey What makes Aneela Hoey's bag and organizer designs stand out is a combination of good design sense and interesting construction. In many cases her bags open in interesting ways to reveal additional pockets or simply make it easier to access what's stored inside. She also frequently uses somewhat unusual … Continue reading Discovering new bag construction techniques

A sparkly #finaltouchblock for day seven of #quiltmasspectacular. With a block like this I find it particularly interesting to see different color combinations. Design by @the.weekendquilter.
Catching up with #quiltmasspectacular. Yesterday's block was Cinnamint by @satterwhitequilts. HST never disappoint, but halfway through the assembly I always get terribly confused about how I orient and sew together my little squares... Luckily you get rewarded by a stunning endproduct! On a different note, I always found the peppermint treat that inspired this quilt lock rather confusing. Why would you associate mint taste with red? What makes this worse is that in Germany we have a treat that has a very similar appearance but with strawberry and cream flavor. . . . #cinnamintblock
Today's #quiltmasspectacular block is called Guiding Lights and was designed by @shannonfraserdesigns. It's constructed using FPP and it took me a while to get back into the flow with this technique. A good reason to make two, since the second block was much faster :) ... #guidinglightsquilt #foundationpaperpiecing
And here are #quiltmasspectacular blocks 3 and 4! A rather busy version of #blitzenquiltblock (designed by @broadclothstudio) and a much calmer #candycabinblock (by @clothandcrescent). Thanks for these two cute patterns!
I'm a little late to the party, but here are my first too blocks (#hollydaysquilt , #twogiftsforonceblock) for the #quiltmasspectacular. These are fun little projects and the blocks are so small that it's easy to use scraps (like the leftovers from the #indahbatikschallenge). ... Free patterns by @villageboundquilts and @clairevogeley

The last week has been a bit of a mad rush trying to finish this quilt in time to submit it to quiltcon. There were several late night quilting sessions before we left for our Thanksgiving travels. Then, while in NC, there were lots of threads to bury and finally the binding to finish. Fortunately I found some easy-to-thread needles at @mulberrysilks. I also went through a short crisis when I didn't like the binding and I still think that all yellow binding would have been better. Since I didn't have access to a machine I came up with a compromise involving a decorative silk thread (see last picture). Anyways, I'm really glad it's done! Proper photos to follow shortly. #organicdiamondblock #goldendaysquilt
One day I want to make a quilt that captures the softness and lush colors of moss and the quirk, cute shapes of liken!
Slow progress. I'm excited about where this is headed, but managing the bulk on my domestic machine is tiring. #organicdiamondblock #mqgblockstudy #finchmade
This advent calendar doubles as a wall hanging during the January - November. It's a project that I finished last year but it now seemed timely to share. I love the German tradition of lightening up December with some gift giving 🎁. As you might be able to tell from the lush green trees, these pictures are from earlier this year but somehow I never got around to posting them 🤷‍♀️. This was my first attempt at using my favorite #loominousfabric by @annamariahorner for a garment. The blouse pattern is from an older @burda_style magazine.
Voila! My entry to the @hoffmanfabrics #mqgfabricchallenge. The fabrics made me think of leaves moving in the wind and I tried to capture some of that sensation. I'm really pleased with how the quilting turned out here! #showusyourmqg #dcmqg #meandyoufabric #meandyoubatiks
